Arrivals, Departures and Airlines at Rhode Island Airport

History of T. F. Green International Airport

Following its dedication in 1931, the Rhode Island State Airport Terminal was constructed in 1933. Five years later, it was renamed in honor of Green, who had just been elected to the Senate in 1931. At the time, it had three concrete runways.

The Army Air Force took control of PVD from 1942 to 1945 for flight training during WWII. Further expansion and modernization took place after the war. For example, in 1957, records showed that it had 26-weekday departures.

A new terminal was built in 1964, replacing the old (1933) terminal. More flights were added to the facility in the following years.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon made a campaign stop at the airport. Air Force One again touched down at T. F. Green in 1975, carrying then President Gerald Ford.

The 1964 terminal was replaced again with a modern facility in 1991 with 18 new gates. Also added were the Lower Arrival Level and Upper Departure Levels. In 1997, four modern gates were also added.

Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, T. F. Green Airport faced a temporary decrease in passenger traffic. Few years later, it increased to a high of 5.7 million passengers in 2005.

On October 1, 2017, T. F. Green's runway 5/23 was officially opened for use at its new expanded length of 8,700 feet. Planning on the project began in the 1990s, and work on the expansion began in 2013.

In 2021, the busiest domestic routes from PVD include Orlando, Florida, Baltimore, Maryland, Charlotte, North Carolina, Atlanta, Georgia, Tampa, Florida, Chicago–O'Hare, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Washington-National, Chicago-Midway, Illinois, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The airport's terminal, named for former Rhode Island governor Bruce Sundlun, has two concourses: North and South. The South Concourse has eight gates, and the North Concourse has 14 gates.

Despite its name, PVD currently serves domestic flights only.
